Melanna Aldebaran was born on the defunct Immanent Reward, to a small community of farmers and stargazers, who lived off the ship’s (now arcane, but still running) life support systems, and who enjoyed, due to its drift through relatively unoccupied space, a peaceful and harmonious existence devoid of Imperial scrutiny. Melanna’s natural sensitivity made her an excellent leader, and the ship was peaceful and even prosperous under her guidance, until the Black Ships came.
When the seal of Saint Innogen was fixed in her mind, Melanna, newly baptized Grim in the Saint’s honor, forgot nearly every detail of her previous life, and what she does remember shames her for its waste of talent and less than faithful service to the Emperor. For the use of the Imperium she has been forged into an ideal: ruthless, practical, and zealously devoted to the Emperor. If she has suffered some lessened emotional capability, it can hardly be viewed as much of a loss.
