Memphis

A key flashback: young Joe Biscuit at the Crossroads meets with the Man, who offers thirty songs in exchange for his soul. Joe balks at this; instead he buys just one song in exchange for his sight. The Man tells him how to get in touch if he ever changes his mind.

Back in Memphis, BillRuby gives Black some Confederate money and tells him to make the KingSnake happy at the poker table. The game is on an old riverboat in the Mississippi; Ruby cannot go there for unclear reasons. The players are Black, the King Snake, and a man named Leo Gold. AnnabelleCairo is the dealer. She deals Black several straight flushes, forcing him to win big.

Meanwhile, Ben and Blind Joe meet Angie and go to the SunRecords studio to record a song -- Blind Joe weaves bits of JudgmentDay in and gives it substantial power. Everyone is deeply affected; Ben rips it to MP3. Afterwards, they buy HarrySmith's folk collection from one of the Sun Records employees, and we hear "Dan Siegel's Grave" for the first time.

The trio also has their first encounter with IAm when an I AM sales rep pushes it on them. They wisely refuse.

Reese went to DoctorWade (an epideromancer) to get patched up on advice from Bill Ruby. Wade insisted on giving Reese a tattoo in the process. He used mescaline in the inks, triggering a vision in which Reese chose the path of silver over the path of gold, saw the SevenCities, and saw something wicked in the west [WickedWest].

Reese then met Danny Greer, who said Reese was the King's Herald. Danny urged immediate action, so Reese and Danny went back to get Black, who had just made an attempt on Annabelle's life at the poker table. The three of them then grabbed Ben, Angie, and Blind Joe and got out of town with Ruby's goons not far behind.

Our first session with Jess and Chris F, and the origin of the "Seat of Pain."
