Recruits (a) give money to recruiters and (b) enlist fresh recruits to give them money. Amway is one of the most common pyramid schemes. IAM appears to be a pyramid scheme of a similar type, though it is by no means clear what they are selling. The Florida land boom of the 1920s, where Barron Collier made his fortune, was essentially a giant pyramid scheme. Some say the whole stock market, indeed the whole American economy, can be seen as a pyramid scheme of sorts.
