"We meet in the midst of a nation brought to the verge or moral, political, and material ruin. Corruption dominates the ballot box, the Legislatures, the Congress, and touches even the ermine of the Bench. The people are demoralized ... The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes for a few ... and the possessors of these in turn despise the Republic and endanger liberty. From the same prolific womb of governmental injustice we breed the two great classes--tramps and millionaires."
--preamble to the Omaha Platform of the People's Party, 1892
Populism was the political movement of agrarian unrest in the waning years of the 19th century. It manifested as the
GrangeMovement, as the
greenbackers, and as the
PeoplesParty. The Populists called for the reclamation of lands held by railroads and other corporations, government ownership of the railroads and telegraph, a graduated income tax, a flexible and inflated paper currency and/or the free coinage of silver (a divide within populism that ultimately contributed to the collapse of the movement), immigration restriction, an eight-hour work day, and outlawing the use of the
Pinkertons against labor.
